“True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.”
--Socrates

“The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.”
--Abraham Lincoln

June Meeting Wrap Up

With the election pace so frantic up through June 8, the club took a break in June and piggybacked the official June 24 meeting  with an address by author and scholar Dr. Reza Aslan, sponsored by sister DP-SFV club Valley Grass Roots for Democracy in Van Nuys. Aslan, author of “Beyond Fundamentalism” and a frequent media guest commentator as well as professor of religions, is a contributing editor at Daily Beast. He had copies of his new book on sale to sign but directed his remarks—and a half-hour of spritied questions—on the overall topic of the Mideast future, from all sides, and current thoughts on the “two-state solution.”

July 29th Club Meeting
7pm, Burbank Senior Artists Colony Auditorium

THE NEXT MAJOR CRISES: WATERantelope_valley
Actually, the water crises is upon us now.

Los Angeles pumps water from the Colorado River, the Owen’s Valley and the Sacramento Delta and yet all the water that falls in the mountains that feed the Los Angeles watershed is diverted off our roofs, down our streets and out the LA River to the ocean.

Joe Flores, Conservation Department manager with Burbank Water and Power, will get you up-to-date with the reality and the outlook of the water crisis at different levels of government, including our local ration plan and future in Burbank.

Find out how bad it could be and what is being done to avert the disaster. Find out what you can do as an individual to make a difference and what we as a community must do if Burbank and the rest of LA area are going to survive.  We will also screen a short video about Rainwater Harvesting and/or a short award winning film about the whistle-blower who saved the LA river from losing it’s Clean Water Act protections.

Be sure to be on hand at this meeting when we pick a day to crew the county party’s booth at the LA Country Fair, as we did last year.... plus get the latest on what’s going down at state, federal and local levels, as always.

The Burbank Senior Artists Colony is located at:
240 East Verdugo Ave.
The auditorium is on the second floor, look for signs.

SINGLE PAYER NOW!  event

Come to a discussion with Sara Rogers, legislative health care consultant to Senator Mark Leno who is the author of SB 810—the latest attempt to pass a single-payer system in our state:

Sunday, August 1, 2 p.m.: 3655 South Grand Ave, Mercado La Paloma.

August 26th Club Meeting
7pm, Burbank Senior Artists Colony Auditorium

“Health Care for all!” and “No on 18,” the state  “water bonds” proposition that so many environmental groups are opposed to.  We’ll have a guest speaker on each of these pressing topics—plus an update on what members can do as the campaign season heats up after Labor Day.

Fall Fundraiser:
Something different, light and entertaining?

We are planning to have a very *special* fundraising event this year!  The focus will be entertainment, food & frolic and fundraising opportunities that benefit the Club, while being fun and interesting for the participants!  This fundraiser will be open to members, our family and friends, as well as anyone who’d like to come to enjoy the evening and support the club.

We are in the beginning stages of planning, so watch this SPACE!  :-)

Voter Registration?

After a rough spring and hot summer, voter reg tabling will begin anew after Labor Day at Burbank grocery stores and other high-traffic public venues. It’s easy and a good way to meet people: just be ready to spend a couple hours on a Saturday or Sunday for the good cause
